Job cuts at BMW

Car manufacturer BMW have confirmed today that they will axe 800 jobs from there oxford plant. The job loses are going to affect the agency workers on the weekend shifts. The cuts will start in early March when the plant will operate a five day week instead of the current seven. The site has also closed for a week to stop production as a result of the economic downturn.

Almost a third of the Cowley workforce are agency staff and there is concern amongst the workers as some complained today that they would not receive any redundancy pay. Some of the agency staff have worked at the plant for over 4 years and have spoken out to say they feel used and disgraced.

The BMW group have also identified 150 surplus workers at the Mini plant in Swindon.
