NHS failing on recruitment

According to the Nursing Times, the NHS is failing to increase recruitment for its community nurses workforce.

The figures have not gathered momentum although the new strategy was announced almost three years ago.
Just the SHA of West Midlands seems to be considering shifting its workforce to meet the government intentions.

The majority are still increasing the acute nursing workforce faster than their community nurses.

Caroline Waterfield, acting deputy head of employment services for NHS Employers, said:

‘We don’t think it has happened as quickly as people thought, some organisations are only looking at it now. It’s a slow drift across, which will continue to happen across the next few years.’

However, she added that the NHS Next Stage Review will:

‘really focus commissioners’ minds around where their services are being provided – it’s the lever we needed to make the change happen’
